Important People
Many leaders and inspirational people appeared during the Haitian Revolution. This is a little bit about them.
François Mackandal (1728 - 1758)
Mackandal was born in the Lorango Kingdom of West Africa. By the age of 12, François Mackandal was brought to Saint Domingue, sold to Lenormand de Mezy and put to work on a sugar plantation. In 1751, François ran from his plantation to the mountains where other renegade slaves lived. Later he became a Maroon leader. He was the first to unite various Maroon groups together and became known as the "Lord of Poison" for his selecting and distributing of poisonous plants, which slaves across the colony snuck into their owner's meals. François Mackandal was burnt at the stake in 1785 after a female slave released information on his poisoning campaign after being tortured. He remained an influential figure throughout the revolution.
