of the Haitian Revolution
Below are positive and negative impacts the Haitian Revolution had among the people in Haiti and around the world.
Negative
- Countries were in some terms "scared" of the situation occurred, especially those countries with slavery. This included the powerful nations such as United States, France, Britain, and Spain.
- Western powers and world powers ignored country, not allowing trade. This influence smaller countries to do the same. In the end the most of the world turned a blind eye to future events.
- Slave trade to Haiti closed, hurting the slave trade industry for its largest buyer's country was now full of free slaves.
- Dominican Republic, their closest country, disliked them due to the revolution. They did not give contact or contact Haiti and did not assist Haiti when they were in great debt.
Neutral
- Haitian people fled to other countries during Revolution (Plantation owners and their slaves). Over 10,000 fled to the state of Louisiana in the United States. This greatly influenced the area with the french language as well as Haitian culture.
Positive
- French is still an official language of Haiti. It is taught in most schools and is on most public locations.
- Education is still based on French ways
- Independence movements in Latin America took inspiration from Haiti. This included places such as Jamaica and Venezuela.
